Abstract
According to the Life-sustaining Treatment Decision-making Act, patients who are in their final and dying stages can withhold or withdraw life-sustaining treatment at medical institutions where the Medical Institution Ethics Committee is established. Withholding or withdrawing patients¡¯ life-sustaining treatments can be realized through advance care planning (ACP) in which patients and healthcare professionals discuss and make decisions about the patients¡¯ treatment and care plans. Especially, nurses take care of their patients and have the closest relationship to the patient, so they can assist them in establishing the most appropriate ACP from the patient¡¯s point of view. However, the Life-sustaining Treatment Decision-making Act does not stipulate the role of nurses, and nurses have limitations in actively participating in the decision-making process for patients, such as withholding or withdrawing patients¡¯ life-sustaining treatment. In this paper, researchers seek to confirm that nurses can play an important role in realizing patients¡¯ autonomy and best interests in the ACP according to Life-sustaining Treatment Decision-making Act.
